Inventory

I agree with the results of the Inventory. I prefer Learner-Centered assessment. It is important to know what the students do well in and what they have not succeeded in. We should also raise questions about teaching strategies and curriculum that we use and understand how to assess learning in a useful way.

In Teacher-Centered learning:
1) Teaching and assessing are separate.
2) The Instructor's role is to be primary information giver and primary evaluator.
3) Assessment is used to monitor learning.
4) Emphasis is on the right answers.
5) Desird learning is assessed indirectly through the use of objectively scored tests.
6)Only students are viewed as learners.
In Learner-Centered learning:
1) Teaching and assessing are intertwined.
2) The Instructor's role is to coach and facilitate. The Instructor and the students evaluate learning together.
3)Assessment is used to promote and diagnose learning.
4) Emphasis is on generating better questions and learning from errors.
5) Desired learning is assessed directly through papers, projects, performances, portfolios, etc.
6) Instructors and students learn together.

Reflections

REFLECTIONS
Module 1: Why is assessment important?
This week I started my class Assessment in E-Learning. I am feeling very positive about this class. I especially enjoyed one of the first activities where we got to Interview another classmate. I am looking forward to learning a lot during this class. 1-14-10
Module 2: Emerging practices of online assessment. We are working on a Blog this week. I am finding it frustrating, but I am learning. My “aha” moment occurred when I realized that I didn’t have to already know how to do everything we were doing in class. It is ok to ask for help. Many thanks to the awesome Instructors and Students in this class!
As stated in the article Edublogs as an Online Assessment “To really succeed students must learn to self-assess so that they can understand the main purposes of their learning and thereby grasp what they need to do to achieve.”( Lee, J. & Allen, K. 2006, p.393). Students are able to decide how well they understand what they need to learn for themselves. 1-23-10
Module 3: Perfect E-Storm. This week we are learning about the convergence of emerging technology, enormous learner demand, enhanced pedagogy and erased budgets. These are producing many new learning opportunities in the online learning environment. We also made a Concept Map using Inspiration 9 software. I enjoyed doing this. I made mine about a class I
am interested in creating called Explore Career Options. 1-31-10
Module 4: Variety of Assessments I was glad that I got the chance to learn about the many assessment tools that were introduced this week. I enjoyed the Midterm Project:Assessment Toolkit. 2-7-10
Module 5: Taxonomy of Assessment This week we learned about Bloom's Assessment Taxonomy. We used it to covert a face to face Journalism class to an online class. I enjoyed learning about this and found it very useful. 2-13-10
Module 6: Cybercoaching - an Emerging Model I enjoyed our topic this week. I think our instructor does a wonderful job of Cybercoaching us. She guides us and encourages us to do our best. We feel free to ask questions so we will know what to do in the future when we no longer have her as an instructor. 2-21-10
Module 7: Summative Assessment This week we did our final project. We used 4 online assessment tools with 4 corresponding learning objectives. I made a project for a Third Grade Online Language Arts Class using the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. It was fun1
Module 8: Discourse Analysis I thought this topic was very interesting. When you are in an online class you don't have the chance to hear voice inflections or other tones that you do when speaking directly to someone. You have to display tones and meanings. I think that knowing the different types of discussion posts will help me in the future. 3-6-10

Interview - Elizabeth

Why have you chosen this course, this university and/or this program?
I am working on my Masters in Education and my E-Learning and Online Teaching Certificate. I chose UW-Stout because both of these programs were online. I feel that when learning to teach online classes it is important to be an online student first.
Tell me about your background, experiences, and/or skills.
I am a Substitute Teacher, mainly at the elementary school level. I am married with three children.
What do you expect from this course?
I want to learn all that I can about assessment in e-learning. I am hoping this course is geared towards people of all technical ability.
What is one thing we might never have guessed about you?
I get test anxiety. I am hoping that by learning different ways to assess knowledge, I can help other students who also have this. It is frustrating to know the material, but get so worried about getting everything right that I forget it. I find this especially true when tests are worth a big percentage of the grade in a class.
Who is that special someone, thing or event that you cherish and would never want to give up?
I take my kids on a yearly vacation to the WI Dells. We really enjoy the water parks and rollercoasters. (Maybe I should say that they take me there).
